GUAPAS Y MUCHACHOS, I THINK I CROSSED THE BORDER WITHOUT NOTICING

How did I live this long without discovering old Mexican rural music?

In my ongoing search for the oldest rural expressions in music, I often find myself following unexpected paths. Many times, I begin in one region, within a specific tradition, and slowly move forward, trying to uncover sounds that have preserved something essential, something that has endured through time.

Recently, a new discovery brought me a special kind of joy. As I explored old Mexican rural music, I began noticing elements that felt surprisingly familiar. IMHO among melodies, rhythms, and styles of performance deeply rooted in the Mexican countryside, I found traces that reminded me of old Texas rural music, one of the traditions I have studied most intensely in recent years and one that continues to inspire me greatly.

At first, the discovery caught me by surprise. While each tradition possesses its own unique identity, the geographical proximity of these regions helps explain certain points of connection. Political borders do not always correspond to cultural boundaries. Over the decades, people, customs, instruments, and forms of expression have traveled across these lands, leaving marks that can still be heard in the music today.

This is not to suggest that one tradition is the same as the other. Quite the opposite. What fascinates me is the realization that distinct cultures can share similar sensibilities. At times, a melodic phrase, a particular rhythmic feel, or even an emotional atmosphere can evoke an unexpected sense of familiarity, as if two different stories were quietly speaking to one another across a distance.

These discoveries are precisely what make musical research so rewarding. Just when we think we understand the boundaries of a particular musical world, a new direction appears and expands our perspective entirely. That is exactly what happened as I ventured deeper into old Mexican rural music.

I am truly excited about this new horizon. It feels as though a new door has opened before me, revealing paths I had never explored before. There is still much to hear, learn, and understand, but I already have the feeling that I have discovered a rich and inspiring landscape filled with possibilities.

The journey continues. And once again, music proves that there is always another road waiting to be discovered.
